Be Fearless Be Kind
BE FEARLESS BE KIND is Hasbro’s new signature philanthropic initiative. It’s designed to inspire and empower kids to have the compassion, empathy and courage to stand up for others, include everyone, and make a difference in their communities.
The goal of BE FEARLESS BE KIND is to elevate this issue and provide resources to help parents and kids with the ultimate goal of building a kinder generation. A generation where all kids are included; where differences are appreciated; where empathy and compassion are nurtured in kids, and where kids get the feeling of fulfilment that comes with doing the right thing.
At Hasbro, it is our purpose to make the world a better place for children and their families, and we have a long and proud tradition of empowering childhood through our many philanthropic programs. Through play, kids learn how to follow the rules, be patient, take turns, collaborate on teams and be good winners and losers. It’s in our DNA to nurture critical social and emotional skills that propel kids into kind teammates, good friends and positive citizens.
Because of the pervasiveness and influence of our brands on kids around the world, we have a unique opportunity to elevate these issues and teach children the emotional skills that will help them stand up for others and be inclusive throughout their lives.
Our call to action is simple: stand up for others, be inclusive, make a difference.
We want kids to stand up for others, include everyone, and take action when they see a problem.
Our Fearless Partners
Our goal is an ambitious one, and we know we can’t do it alone. We’ve engaged best-in-class partners to help us achieve our mission and continue to expand their work. From helping kids, parents and educators learn more about developing empathy, to running projects and campaigns that make it easy for them to stand up and take action, these organizations have been carefully selected to lend their expertise to BE FEARLESS BE KIND.
What Is Empathy?
Let’s start by sharing the definition of the word “Empathy” as provided by Merriam-Webster:
• em·pa·thy (ˈem-pə-thē); Noun: the feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions : the ability to share someone else's feelings
According to Dr. Gwen Dewar, in Parenting Science, “most definitions of empathy include the idea of "tuning in" to the feelings of another creature. You watch someone else. You observe his/her situation. You recognize what he/she must be feeling and experience similar feelings yourself. This is empathy at its most basic: The ability to feel another creature's pain—or at least imagine his pain in a vivid, personal way.”
When referencing the essence of the word “empathy,” a colloquial phrase people will often use is that of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes.” A similar phrase was made popular in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee.
• “You never really know a man until you understand things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.”
- [Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. J.B.Lippincott & Co., 1960]
