Through the BE FEARLESS BE KIND initiative, Hasbro partnered with the Greater Good Science Center at University of California, Berkeley to develop these resources and practices to help parents and educators raise a kinder generation.
Parents want to raise kind and fearless kids. But what helps kids grow up to be caring and courageous? Research suggests that building strengths like forgiveness, generosity, gratitude, and purpose inspire kids to contribute to the greater good!
Choosing forgiveness can be hard, but it helps kids to feel empowered by releasing them from the heavy burden of anger and vengeance. Forgiveness can strengthen kids by helping them heal and move on to live a meaningful and purposeful life.
Children as young as toddlers show a tendency to be generous. Generosity leads to a “warm glow” good feeling and it also strengthens our social connections. Generosity is contagious: people tend to be more giving when they’ve seen others do the same.
Gratitude goes beyond saying, “Thank you.” It helps kids notice that there is goodness in their lives that comes from others and makes relationships stronger. Grateful children tend to be more helpful and generous.
Youth with purpose have meaningful, long-term goals that drive them toward improving others’ lives. Apart from being motivated to contribute to the broader world, they are more resilient and optimistic—they have brighter expectations about the future.
